Answering questions - same student

While going over the homework scenarios, I select students to read the scenario and ask specific information directed to that student. It never fails that one of my 'seasoned' students will always say the answer out loud. I have specifically used the reader's name when asking the questions which sometimes works. I feel if I speak to my 'seasoned' student on the side, she may think I am discriminating as she is an older student from another country.

To encourage class participation and also limit participation of the over talkative student:
I have used a pair of large dice in the classroom...depending on the size of the class, numbers are assigned...Once the question is asked, the dice are rolled . Only the student/or students with that number corresponding to the number rolled on the dice may respond.

Hi Bret,
Super way to get involvement from other students. An instructor should not let any one student dominate the question/answer session.
Patricia

When I have a student that does this I will ask the rest of the class if that answer is correct, or if there is any other student that has a different answer. I will keep asking questions until another student answers up giving a different answer or confirming the first answer. This gets some of the other students involved in the discussion.
