Getting students to raise their hand before answering a question

I have trouble with entire class speaking out the answer to my questions even though I repeatedly ask them to raise their hands before answering so everyone can hear their answer. Any suggestions?

From first day of class you must enforce this. If you back off the students get out of hand.

I make sure that everyone understands the material I have just completed going over w/ them and then we review and it's like a contest to see who can get called upon first.

I have the same problem; I usually correct them openly, but to no avail. Courteous and lack of respect and just good manners seemm to be a thing of the past to some students.

Hi Shani,
It is a very effective method. All is involved.

I have had that problem as well, but I think I'm going to implement the "Use it Wisely" card idea that was given in the lesson. It would create more opportunities for everyone to talk and show the "talkative students" that otehr students have an opinion too.

I have had students in each term that will just yell their question or talk over others . I repeat the rules but there always seems to be one or two .

I also set the standards on the fist day of class.I explain that by raising their hand to ask a question or answer is an act of respect for the instructor as well as the other students in the room.

Hi Lisa,
Whatever your rules are about hand raising should be addressed thoroughly and firmly on Day 1. I do not have a problem with this, but I can certainly see that it can definitely be a potential problem.

I set the standards the very first day of class to let the students know that we can all sing together but not everyone can talk at the same time; so we need to respect our classmates by rising ours hands and waiting on the instructor to acknowledge you before you speak.

Hi Joan,
Yes, discpline those who are not following your directive. Remove them from the room for violating the conduct code.
