Challenging Students

When dealing with challenging student it's important to keep an open line of communication and let them know you want the best for them!

I have a different issue regarding Challenging Students. In my class I have an older student who requires quite a bit of "hand holding" sort of speaking. She consistently asks the same questions every class. She is usually 3 questions behind our discussions, therefore, always needs answers repeated. I know it's frustrating to the other students by their facial expressions and I catch myself by the end of class becoming "short" with this student. I have her in 2 classes this term and she informed me that she's in one of my classes next term.
I am not sure how to help her.

Hi June,
I concur! It is also just as important to keep open communication at all times. Students will hold your feet to the fire. Communication is key.

It is important to keep the communication line open, when you have challenging students. And letting the center stage student be the observer works out better for the other students.

Hi Dustin,
You must nip things in the bud upon the initial action of it, otherwise students will feel as though certain actions are acceptable, and they will continue to perform these actions.

I think when you said "from the beginning" you addressed a very important point. If you don't set the precident at the beginning of class or at the first incident then it becomes much harder to address as well as justify your actions later.

Challenging students can become very difficult to handle if they are not handled correctly from the very beginning. A student must be heard, but at the same time you must make them understand who is the instructor.

Students should be helped to understand that what is being presented in class will fit into the larger picture, their completion of the course and their future success.
