one on one
A little time each day should be spent with each student. Let them know that you are on thier side.
Hi Roger,
Super! Students should be made known of their positive/negative attributes. I like how you express both to the students so that they know they have great qualities, but there are some things they need to work on as well.

I like to do a one-on-one every few class days. I discuss with the student their positive and negative attributes, and how they are progressing in class. Then I discuss how these attributes may apply in the work place. My goal is to make the student see or realize how he or she will be evaluated in a real work environment.
During group activities in Math when I have odd number attendance, I do one-on-one by teaming with a struggling student then we'll resume during tutorials after classtime, extending out to the student means a lot to them, they can immediately feel that they are important to me and that I'm concern with their career success. This rapport is very rewarding.
I had the benefit last term of having a lot of art-centric classes where one-on-one instruction was absolutely necessary for a lot of the time (critiques, demos, etc.). I can honestly say that not only did it give me better insight into the students, but it was also illuminating of the student mentality. There are a sea of instructors who simply don't give them that time. By default, they don't think you care, and don't think you're on their side. Doing this really shows them otherwise.
Yes for sure i've done this and it really gives the student a sence of importantance. it makes them very coffortable and will open up more in tough situations.
It is important for every student to realize that you recognize them and their contributions to the class. meeting individually enhances this feeling because you, the teacher, are taking time out of your "busy schedule" to include them. Individually you can say what you think or know to be important to the individual and give then that reall feeling of belonging. I do it. It works!
