Late/missed assignments

I picked up some good tips on this one!

This is a real good idea!! I really thin this would be effective.

I learned something from all of you too. Being a new instructor I wasn't clear on a late assignment policy. This is a mistake I won't be making again.

We have started to use an online grading site (Engrade). I find that if I put the assignments in there with the due date as well as give it verbally in class, I have a better rate of people handing in the assisgnments. They can see their grades at any point with this and it is nice because if they do not hand it in I mark it a zero and they can see how fast their grade will drop!

Hi Jennifer,
I agree 100%! It must be EXTENUATING as you have mentioned, and documentation must be provided as proof.

I have a policy of no late work/assignments (if there are extenuating circumstances such as a death in the family or hospitalization I will make an exception but they have to prove it to me and the student will not receive a late penalty). In the real world, most employers don't take excuses for work not being completed on time and I think it is doing the students a dis-service to allow them to turn in work whenever they feel like.

I have found that reviewing course requirements helps to remind students that they need to keep focused and continue their efforts until the end of the course.

Hi Diana,
Keep them focused as much as possible! If the laxing is decreasing their grade, talk to the student about a drop in their grade to grab their attention.

Diana
I have noticed about 3/4 of the way through the course my students become lax. Do you have this problem?
Suggestions on what you do?
