Student that knows everything.

Let them do it there way to see whats like they say the easyer way of doing the task?they need to find out the hard way before they take the instructors advise now can we try do it the way its done in the industry.

I usually follow the same type exercises in my classes with know-it-alls. I usually end up gearing them towards being my 'helper's' in the class and give them little extra challenges. And I always start out my classes talking about the real world and RESPECT.

"Know-it-all" students usually like showing off. Without embarrassing them, let them demonstrate their expertise, as well as their mistakes. Afterwards, give them credit for what they did right; then point out their mistakes in a subtle way, and show them how to do it right. Finish by saying something like, "Good job! Not only did you do well in...., you also welcome constructive criticisms the way professional individuals do." This way, they will realize that they still have plenty of things to learn without having been embarrassed by the instructor.

If this doesn't work, I tell them that in the real world, humble and obedient individuals have greater chances at their jobs than the "know-it-alls."

Hi Joyelle,
Sometimes students have to really learn the hard way, and then they believe fire really burns.

I agree. Students have to try it themselves before they will trust the teacher's word.

Hi Joseph,
You let them see that their way is not the best way first, and then they are more receptive to trying it your way because their way failed. This is a good lesson for students to learn that the teacher really knows what's best for them.
