I agree. Students do like to hear what others in the field have to say. Students like to hear about other's work experiences. It is great motivation for the students.
A guest speaker can motivate the student when the instructor may not be able to
Guest speakers can be motivating. Guest speakers can give the students a break from their regualar instructor and hear from someone else on a topic of interest. Guest speakers can also motivate students for future career possiblities and let them hear from a different perspective.
Hi James,
Graduate guest speakers are the absolute best! There is nothing like talking about the same things the students are experiencing.
Patricia
I enlist the time of a guest speaker who is a graduate of our facility. The students can easily associate with the successful graduate who has been down the exact same road.
Hi Bruce,
Guest speakers are such great resources! Students enjoy having guest speakers, and they learn a lot from guest speakers.
Patricia
Hi Ronda,
Your professor gave you an exprience that you will never forget, and I applaud you for wanting to give your students that same unforgettable experience.
Patricia
When I was an Undergrad, I had a professor who would have a guest speaker for our class every other week, if not every week. I really enjoyed it and still talk about that class today. I would love to provide that same type of experience for my students, but conflicting schedules seem to be a obstacle at this point. Once that problem is solved, I plan to have more guest speakers in my classes.
I use a guest lecturer as motivation and to control behavior of my students. I teach at culinary school. Part of the syllabus includes a three course meal with wines which is then critiqued. Having a guest drives the conversation in a positive direction and reinforces the goals to succeed in the program
It really helps them understand the course and makes them think about quitting.
I have found that a good and respected guest speaker can add support and validity to your lectures. It is also a great way to boost class enthusiasm.
Hi Sara,
It is always good for students to hear from someone else other than the instrutor all the time. Students enjoy hearing from guest speakers about on the job happenings.
Patricia
Hi Karen,
You are right students absolutely love guest speakers! I really like how you bring in a resource person that can speak about the topic you are teaching or have taught.
Patricia
I have brought in guest speakers to my classes many times and it is always a big hit with the students. I teach massage therapy and I try to bring in individuals who are really unique or unusually successful in their fields. For example, when teaching pregnancy massage I bring in a massage therapist who specializes in pre-natal massage and is also a labor doula. When teaching thai massage, I bring in the woman I took my continuing ed in Thai from, and have her speak to my class about authentic Thai massage.
Hi Amy,
I love guest speakers! They serve as a great way to add validity to what has been taught and what will be taught.
Patricia
As I stated previously, guest speakers lend validity to the courses we teach and are a touchpoint for the students in networking with the industry professionals. Often times, a guest speaker can give a new slant or view to a concept that has been introduced in class. This not only benefts the students, but lends creibilty to the instructor as well.
Hi Amy,
Guest speakers are just simply awesome! They are so motivating and inspiring to our students. The are the virtual proof of success.
Patricia
In our curriculum, a guest speaker is the best evidence that there really are opportunities for our students to get good jobs. The guest speakers reaffirm out lectures, and our advising to the students regarding such topics as professionalism, opportunities, and especially the need for certification in the field.
I believe a guest speaker brings the job to life. It may help remind the student of their initial intrest in the program and also give them an oppertunity to ask questions about the "on the job" aspects and get the opinions and views of someone other than the instructor that the student see's daily int the classroom.
Hi Bridgette,
I concur! The parent/teacher analogy is is the same in so many ways...
