Hi Wendy,
Students like learning about their instructors. It is fine as long as things are kept professional.

Wow, you really are concerned about your students! You went the extra mile by phoning and emailing students with late assignments.
Patricia

What a nice way to break the monotony of the lecture.
Patricia

This is an excellent way to capture students attention.
Patricia
Hi Steven,
Competion is a good thing. Students tend to work harder.
Patricia
Hi Augustine,
What have you found that interests the student?
Patricia
Getting the students attention is imperative as a teacher. There are several strategies the teacher can employ to get the students attention. Most important is capturing the student’s interest with the subject matter – arousing their interest and curiosity. For this to happen, the instructor needs to know what interests the students.
A method that I like is to make the students focus on my y having them close their laptops. I will ask pointed questions and ask the class to respond. Another method is to divide the class into 2 large groups and have each group complete the same assignment, the group that completes the assignment first "wins".
To capture the attention of students, I use the "minute" papers approach quite frequently. I usually give them some small incentive such as 5 minutes extra break time or even some nourishment - I teach evening classes where everyone comes in right from work and don't get a chance to eat. And I review the minute papers in class to reinforce the knowledge and to see if I am providing the correct instruction for the subject.

Have a "hot topics" discussion - engaging students in lively conversation. Sometimes I'll do it in the middle of a lecture, just to take it up a notch. I'll ask them what they think.
Hello Everyone,
Throughout the lessons there were many great suggestions and feedback materials that I found helpful. Within the online setting, a few ways in which I try to engage students are to provide interactive and informative live chats where the students are able to share questions and remain on topic within the pod chats. I also take the time to phone and email students who are late on assignments or seem to be missing material. This extra assistance has seemed to work in the past in supporting students and providing an engaging learning environment. I will reflect upon the strategies and tips as well for future student experiences that may arise.
I like to vary the class activities through lecture, handouts, discussion, and a field trip to a local museum.
Sometimes I show short videos that are relevant to the lesson plan to break up the routine.
Sometimes when give a real life experience of your own the students who were so envolved in their own coversations all of a sudden become quiet because they are also learning something aboout you and what you experienced in the feild of work that your teaching on
Hi Shelia,
I give a 5% participation grade to help encourage participation.

Hi Shelia,
When you can make things real for students they tend to understand better.
Patricia
Hi Lydia,
Whenever you are mobile in the classroom students tend to really be attentive. They even try to find your location.
Patricia
Creating groups in the classroom, inviting in guest speakers, moving around the classroom and meeting with the student if all else fails.
