make sure stuedents know what is expected

how do i know my students understand what is expected

As an instructor:
I repeat and overview the coursework or assignment towards the end of class.
In lecture class, I review each recipe and have the students take b&p shorthand on the formuls so they are better prepared in Lab class.
I allow for open discussion and questions regarding the formula, unfolding or method.
I use the chalkbaord as a communication tool for taking notes.
I pick out 3-4 students at random and have them repeat outloud what I just covered in class.
I make an annoucement that I will stay after class to discuss and/or answer any questions one-on-one, if having difficulty with course objectives and or expectations.
I make sure student sunderstand the school protocol of management if they feel their having problems with course objectives.

Make sure they repeat what you expect from them

Hi Diane,
I understand your response! Some students simply will not speak up and ask for help. Any time you suspect a student does not understand offer help. Sometimes we can not wait on the students to come to us, we have to go to them.

Do we ever now if the student knows what is expected? When we think they understand, with no questions asked for clarification and you get an assignment that is off the wall, you now know that student did not know what was expected of him by the work turned in. If a student is having a hard time understanding then ask that student to stay after class and you will go over everything at that time. Hopefully the one to one will clarify his misunderstandings or confusion as to what is expected

Hi Robin,
Ask if they are any questions!
