Challenging Students

I have had enough examples of the same type of student that now I recognize the behavior of challenging students earlier on these days and I use my prior my experience.

I must admit every so often I encounter a student whose challenges are a combination of many. I am learning through reflecting to redirect some of these students.

I have found in dealing with challenging students it works to get them involved. By assigning them classroom duties - be in charge of clicking the power point slides while I talk, helping out with copies, etc. -seems to slow down some of the challenges. They begin to view themselves as an asset rather than the disruption that everyone sees them to be.

I meet with challenging students outside the classroom. I think this protects their self-esteem as they are not seen by others as troublesome.

Yes, I agree that sometimes the challenging students may challenge me with thinking up ways to deal with them. So, I bring the situations to the level group with whom I teach and we brainstorm.

I have not before heard of the "observer" idea. I wonder if the student might feel like I was picking on him/her.

I like the idea of the colored slips of paper limiting the amount of talk to a fair amount for everyone.

I am going to talk to my level meeting group about these ideas.

Thanks.

Could you please explain your examples?
