Facebook

During this past semester, one thing I've observed, during "down time," is students' use of facebook.

Now, when I say down time, I mean time which is used to work on projects or group assignments. Students who went on facebook were students who finished early! Well, my question is why did they finish early? How well is their work completed?

If I've learned one thing during this past semester, NO MORE FACEBOOK! Also, no more use of computers in class, unless the use is for school work. I could not tell you how many times students, who used facebook alot, had late assignments or incomplete work. These students are more obliged to finishing their work quickly will ill-regard of proficiency. They just want to hop on facebook...

That is so true NO MORE FACEBOOK. What I tend to do is have all computers off when we are in the computer Lab. If I have to have it on I walk around the class deducting points and letting them know that this can get you fired at work if you get on FAcebook when you are at work.

This is a good policy, but unfortunately usually has no teeth. There is a no-cell phone policy where I teach, but it is not enforced by enough faculty (in fact, I've seen other faculty using their cell phones during class activities). It is hard to monitor this issue when the students get away with this behavior continually.

I have seen this also, I just ask them to get off and do that on their own time.

Hi Amy,
It may be a good idea to adopt a "No Social Network Policy" like there is a "No Cell Phone Policy" at most educational institutions.

I have seen this myself. In fact I have seen them doing it when they are suppose to be working on a project I just gave to them to do. I am truly surprised that the schools haven't blocked that from the campus computers. I know it originally was created and geared towards college students but now it isn't.
