Dealing with challenging students

What are the key factors to deal with challenging students?

H Juan,
Let them know verbally and by your actions that you will NOT tolerate their foolishness.

Patricia Scales

I agree, each student is different. We as Instuctors have to use our skills to find ways to motivate the students depending on their needs.

You would hope that if they have enrolled in the course of study you are teaching, they have a genuine interest in the broad topics of the course, but maybe they are having trouble understanding how what you are teaching applies to their goals. Maybe meet with them individually and try to highlight how even the seemingly unimportant details of your class are a necessary part of achieving their goals.

As an Instructor, I try to engage such students with a positive, cool and calm attitude and try to create an environment that is conducive to learning for the less challenging one's giving them the opportunity to paticipate in active learning process.

Each student is diffenent. I try to find what motivated the student and play with the motivational items. If it is money, then show the student how class success with lead to a chance for some financial success.
