centerstage

Had a student last block that just could'nt be quiet.Always had a commet to the point of distraction. A real Challenge.

I believe in every group there is a center stage student. Sometimes it can be used as an advantage. Since they always have a comment and a story about everything, I have them take notes about the class. They usually full of energy so that same energy has to be focus somewhere else. Having them busy with note taking sometimes will have them change their mind about being disrruptive.

OH WOW!!!! I love that Idea. I once went to a conference and the woman/Speaker had these balls in the middle of each persons desk/the desks were set up in a circle.

If someone had a questions they were allowed to take the ball (one person at a time of course)and throw it at the speaker (appropriatley of course) and she would respond to whomeever threw the ball. It was sooo cool.

I love the talking stick. I will absolutley use this... Thank you

Thats a great idea!!! This used to be done at tribal meetings.

I have that same problem this term. I had this same class 2 terms ago and now again this term. Their ages range from 18 to 65. One student is loudly interruptive of the lecture and almost loudly agreeing with me after every statement I make. This distracts me, so I know it must distarct others. His comments could be at times offensive as well (you never know your audience). The bad thing is that the rest of the class started to follow his lead. Discussion is great, but needs a limit. I was worried about the class's retention of the information later for the test. So this is what I did.

I took 5 minutes and explained why "from my heart" this may interfere with their learning and went back to elementary school and made a "talking stick". It is actually a stuffed animal dog that only the person holding it can talk. I hold it when talking about the subject and hang onto it until I complete my thought. This has works amazingly! I get to completely give the information without interruption and then they get there opportunity to share without interruption from classmates too!

Just a suggestion! Hope it helps!

In a couple of cases, I've had to have an after class conference with the offending student, to suggest they let their classmates have a turn offering questions or comments. Often if this is not done, the student's classmates will express their displeasure or frustration themselves.
