The Center Stage Student
How do you curb a Center Stage Student's behavior when they only want to be center stage when they are cracking a joke? When the jokes are over they become very introverted and won't participate in discussions.
I agree this is a useful measure for the center stage student. It helps them get some of the attention they may be needing while helping others. It can be positive.
Hi Lisa,
I like giving this type of student as much attention as possible without distracting/slighting other students.

I have utilized this method, and after awhile this center stage student stops vying for so much attention.
I really like this idea, of having the Center Stage Student help with the lecture.
Hi Orvileta,
I use the same method, and it works well. This method keeps the center stage student from trying to take over entirely.

First, I let them know that I appreciate their contribution to the enjoyment of the class but I would like to here from them on a more serious academic level. I use the no opt out method where all students are required to give an answer and if they are not prepared I come back to them. This way they have to say something even if it is repetition.
I like to have them come up front with me and help deliver the lecture material such as maybe reading a chapter or help with writing on the board
I tend to put those student on the spot. Let them know that knowledge is more important than comedy. Its ok to have fun but also when its time for business, its time for business.
I use them to open discussion, or to break my lecture down to material that the other students can understand. It seems peer to peer conversations help my points get absorbed.
I noticed that many center stage students are in need of significance. If I can engage them in a mission such as helping a student with less experience in the subject matter, then they can be useful and gain their needed significance.
