Dealing with students

I interact with my students in the classroom as much as possible. I had a few students that were otherwise preoccupied while I was lecturing. I decided to change my lecture style to include random questions to each individual student. They never knew when I would call on them and the questions always started an interactive debate. Now I have the students full attention.

Hi Ashley,
We have to do a super job of keeping the class highly energized, otherwise we will begin to have day dreamers.

This is true. I like to do very involved activities even with the adult learners. I find that they can get just as excited as children when it is somewhat competetive in nature and when there is a possibilty of a prize. They love that recognition.

I like this approach as well. That way their attention is somewhat forced, but in a good way, and perhaps more directed and focused to the lecture at hand. There is less time for the day-dreamers.

I like to use a lot of different activities during a lesson to break up the monotony of just lecturing at the front of the classroom. I like to do brainstorming as well as reverse brainstorming. For example, I like to ask the question at the beginning of a new course, " How can I not be a good teacher?" and let the students respond. Then I like to ask, " How can I not be a good student?" and again let them give answers. They always get really engaged. Then we use this to form a contract of what they need from me to be a good teacher and what I need from them to be a good student.

when im dealing with my students, specially new ones,I first make sure that I respect them as individuals and nine times out of ten you will recieve that respect back. Knowing your students names is a huge benefit in the classroom especially when lectures, classroom discussions and group activities are goin on. I try to make sure that i get those studetns that are less likely to participate to get more involved.

Hi Paula,
If the class is interesting, fun, and up beat, students do not want to miss.

It sounds like you found the right way to get those students into the class
