sleeping in class

I had a student that constantly fell asleep in class. I confronted the student on the issue several times and even kicked him out for the day. Administration stated it was his meds and so I needed to keep him in the class. it became an issue for the other students.

Is the student an adult or child, then we know how to handle the situation, if he /she is an adult we talke to them regarding taking their medication at night, son in AM they wil not fall asleep in class, again this is adult learning. If that is a child we should have a talke with the parent regarding the medication to see when will be better for the child to take medication.

In teaching adult students as well as younger students in career colleges I have found the problem of students falling asleep a challenge. What I usually do is first speak to the student in private to find out why they are so tired. Once I understand their situation I do whatever it takes to keep them engaged. Also, in the first class meeting, in a light hearted, but clear manner I address this potential problem by telling the class, "Sometimes, I know, it's hard to keep your focus after a long day. Please get to school a few minutes earlier than the time we start and get something good to eat and maybe have a coffee. It will help you stay awake." I also tell them that I understand that sometimes even cold water splashed on your face can help & if they find themselves dozing, it's fine to get up and go to the bathroom and do just that - splash some cold water on their face.

Great comment.I agree I also ask what the problem is outside of class. Just in case it is a serious issue they need to discuss.

Keeping them busy to prevent sleepiness is very effective. I like to re-enforce to the students that sleeping in class is not ok, not just because its a very expensive nap, but they could miss something they will someday wish they hadn't

Hi Sundeep,
We have very good data displays, and I never turn off the lights during my PowerPoint presentations.

I have a student that always fall asleep because she works long hours. I have her sit in the front and durinfg lectures I make them do more group activities. Also it helps to keep one light on during powerpoint lectures so that the classroom is not completely dark.

That's a great idea. I think I'll use it!

Hi Rebecca,
We have to find ways to keep sleepy students engaged. You have done a good job keeping the sleepy student busy.

I have encountered the same issue. After discussing the issue with the student we found it more helpful for them to be at the front of the class, and "assist" me as needed. I prepared lectures to have "props" that would be located around the room and this student had to get them for me. It kept him engaged and he did not fall asleep. His grades improved too.
