An engaging classroom
It's rather simple. If you want your students to act professional, come to class, and be engaged, make it active and engaging from the first day. Set expectations, follow through, and hold accountable. They will respond AND respect you for. Thoughts?

As stated, the best example of the behavior you expect or want is to model that behavior yourself. Maintain your professional demeanor, be enthused about your subject and use current examples from the news to make the information real. Sticking to the deadlines and being accountable will reinforce that trait in your students no matter where or what you teach. Keeping the mood positive and allowing some ad lib discussions about topics also keeps students engaged and lets them know that you are open to their thoughts and opinions.
I agree...its harder to teach a classroom when a student is not engaged
Hi Courtney,
I concur! We have to help our students see the importance of professionalism and great work ethic.

I couldn't agree more!! I start this by leading by example from their first day. I tell them they aren't starting their new career when they're done with school, they are starting it at orientation. I also do many activities that promote this philosophy and I also explain to them that the characteristics they exhibit now will follow them into externship and their job. So now is the time to develop professional habits!
I truly believe in an engaging classroom. It makes the student eager to learn and know they will experience engagement everyday they attend class.
Hi Denise,
Students have great contacts utilize them to help find resources to make the class more interesting.

Good advice. I'm brand new! I'll come up with a plan for the first day and evaluate whether it was effective. I have planned a guest speaker for one unit. What about asking students for input on possible speakers or field trips?
