Student interaction

I always start class with a fun, student-interaction activity.

I too, like to start the beging of the class off with a "small chat" on how our day went, exciting things that I did at my other job that day. This seems to help wake up and energize everyone, since we are an evening class that last until 10:00 pm.

Hi Maryellen,
Having small talks with students is a good way to build student/instructor rapport.

I try especially on a Monday to ask the students if they had a good weekend, and what did some of them do? It will start a conversation, and students are engaging with each other, and I just listen. Some students learn about each other, some are talking about the weekend, and sharing parts of them selves. Music and food are usually a great ice breaker. I also try study groups that I mix up in the class so that students can be with a variety of students, just incase some are more attentive to study then others.
