To keep students attentive is to keep them engage in all activities ,and lecture.walk around the class,give eye contact to your listener.
Just have to watch roaming too much, a restless teacher is very distracting to students!
I agree that variety helps keep students engaged. It's nice if you can surprise them with a game or course-related video once in a while, to break out of the norm. We need to keep in mind that students have a variety of learning styles, and what works for one student might not work for someone else.

You must be engaging as an instructor. Stand when you teach. Roam the classroom. Provide hands-on activities for your students. Do activities, such as mock learning, role playing, scenarios, simulations, group projects, etc. Variation is key to keep students engaged.
