Center Stage Students

As a new Instructor, Center Student has been an ongoing issue in my class. I didn't try Use-it Wisley Cards, but tried to encourage to raise hand before speaking. What other sugesstion/comments do you have to better handle such students?

Thanks

ifound making them an assistant has worked for me as they seem to strive with more responsibilities

Hi Audrey,
You are right! I have this type of talk with the student as well, and it does work nicely. Positivity is a must in the conversation!

I have had students like this and I found that if you find a time to meet with them in private and discuss things directly it works great. Mainly I would start out with positives "I love the fact that you bring up some awesome questions or discussions on the topic at hand, it is wonderfull. However, I notice that some of the other students are having a hard time getting a word in, and I would greatly appreciate it if you would be willing to share the atmosphere equally with your classmates." With one student I had a signal that I would produce that, that student would recognize to realize they needed to let the rest of the class have their chance. Which that worked very well also.
