Often times guest speaker is what a class of undetermined students need. Many guest speaker come prepared to share some of their personal experiences as to how they once felt as the students in the class perhaps feel. A word of wisdom from someone whom may have had the same thoughs as you, can change ones mind after hearing their story of how they turned their life around to be successful in their chosen career today. When reality sets in, and one can visualize the direction they are headed in, good or bad, through guidance and valid decision making, the out comes can be greater in your thinking process.
I beleieve by speaking and spending time with a true life person in the field causes the student to see reality of the workplace experience. They can ask the true question and answer they seek not just from the instructor, but a person that they can connect with to gain true work knowledge and insight. I see it as adding to their DOK depth of knowledge that they can relate to in achieving their career goals.
It has been my experience as an instructor to utilize guest speakers, and each time it has been a positive factor in motivating the student. They appeared to see and understand the reality of opportunity from people who have been there, done that, and continue to be there and performing that in a quality fashion. Seeing, hearing and being able to speak with real individuals from the field causes the student to realize the chances to excel in their learning, growth, and ability to achieve while observing true individuals of success. It becomes a real and vivid human relationship factor, because they can see the connection of the real person, with the real workplace person of continue practice of the success achievement.
I have had a former student come back to speak to my class and the students really enjoyed it and were motivated again. The former student started his own business and is successful at it so he spoke of that and how it is not impossible, he then hired one of the students later because he had to much work and needed help.
A Guest speaker presentation always helps, as the students see the significance of studying the course and get to know the realistic oppurtunities in their field of study. Every guest speaker has his own set of experiences and reasoning, and this serves as an excellent oppurtunity for the students to learn a different perspective of their field of study.

Great way to put yourself in your students shoes. Even today students love hearing from a guest speaker. It is good for students to hear from someone else other than the instructor all the time.

I have answered this ? with great concern, because some students are hands on and others or book worms. Some just are so discouraged by book work they get overwelmed and depressed not thinking they are capable of doing the assignments. Guest speakers who where in their shoes at one point give them such motivation and energy to carry on through the course.
guest speakers are a valuable assest that an instructor has at their disposal, these professional are working in the field with up to date knowledge, and former students enjoys returning to school when needed.
I agree, as excited as I am to have been in this career Dental Assisting or Massage, having one of their peers come in to share their success is very motivational to the student.
I myself have been one of those guest speakers. And I put this to the students. Your paying for this class! what not use the time and effort to pay attention. Use the course to apply yourself that you yourself may need in a cituation later in life where you work. If you quit this course how many courses are you going to quit. Stand firm now and apply yourself THE BEST YOU CAN. Don't keep being a quitter.
I recall my days as a student when a guest speaker visited the class. It broke up the monotony for me, and gave me a different perspective than that of the instructor. I enjoyed the eperience, and I am certain that my current students would appreciate the same.

I try to find guest speakers who have been in the students shoes themselves. I have found many times that students connect with them and ask for guidance. Nothing pleases me more than when students then reevaluate their situation and are able to succeed.
Guest speakers can speak about how he or she regained sanity by organizing his or her life to balance with class requirements.
Having a guest speaker is priceless because they can encourage students to persevere and motivate them in a refreshing way!
