Center Stage Student

This student is very captivating and usually very knowleable. It is in the teachers best interest to be able to use this personality type to be able to bring the classroom closer together. Should this student be your right hand person they will feel that being the observer is equally an important role to be recognized in class therefore this situation will work GREAT!!!

the only disadvantage of a center stage student is when your trying to coax information out of a group giving them hints and clues.the center stage student may blast out the solutions before the rest have time to process the hints. I have had good results in reading in this high level student into my teaching plan and suddenly they are tossing little hints instead of answers.this may not serve to challenge them, that may take more creativity.

Hi Frank,
The instructor certainly must monitor this type of behavior. Some students will never stop and will try to take over the classroom. We as instructors must make sure that the enviornment is pleasant for all students.

From time to time I get a student who wants attention and will try to answer every question before anyone else has a chance. Because we are a technical school, the answers sometimes require more than an instant of thought, and this student will blurt out the incorrect answers. It doesn't take long before his embarrassment level and class reaction help moderate his behavior. In fact it sometimes this encourages the student to put a few more hours in the books.

There is a limit on how long you can let a student grab the spotlight, but sometimes a day or two of letting the student demonstrate that you should know something about the subject before answering is long enough to do the trick.

I do have a very bright student who always has the right answer and will say it before anyone else has the chance to. I will try the observer role and see how it works.

I thought the same thing, I always try to take advantage of my "talkers." I liked the note card idea too - I think that may help get the non-talkers more motivated if there's an incentive to use the cards.
