Help students help themselves

Helping students use school resources more effectively as well as not seeing themselves as victims in there own life helps them be more committed to completing their education commitment.

encouragement seems to help most students improve.

I Agree helping students realize their own potential will creat a sense of accomplishment, confidence and a I CAN attitude!!!!!

I can honestly say that I have a few students this term alone that seem to be slipping because of the course material is so intense and they have to stay focused and unfortunately that has never truly been required on this level with the complete balance of family, work and school. However, I have found if I lead them to the LRC it seems to enhance their study tips which in returns frees up sometime for them enjoy life more without spinning their wheels studying nonproductively.

I see this a lot in our student population: single moms who have little ones left with a babysitter, no time for homework, no internet access at home, etc. I empathize with them and offer my support and understanding, but at the same time I have to reiterate to them to take advantage of campus resources, as well as reminding them of their responsibilities to my course requirements. It may sound tough to them, but it's a lot tougher when they finally graduate and are working, so they have to learn now how to manage.

True as instructors, we encounter students who require certain assisstance such as financial, transportation, and moral support that we can't provide. However, we can refer them to student services department for those issues. As instructors, we can listen to their concerns.

Hi Pamela,
You are right! We have to serve as the role models we want our students to become.

I like that approach. As a new instructor I saw a few students who saw themselves as victims. It takes firmness, patience and persistence to help students help themselves.
