How to deal with a student that is over qualified for the course

I had a student who was a retired physician that decided they wanted to get into medical billing and coding. When the person was in the Medical Terminology classes, they became the definite center of attention because they were a physician. How can you make this obviously qualified person a more useful part of the class without bringing them to the forefront and undermining your teaching goals?

Many of my students gained their knowledge some time back. The medical field is a dynamic and always advancing arena. It is required by many institutions that if a certain amount of time has elapsed that the courses must be taken again. If they can test out...fine. However, a good review is never a waste of time and may provide a new perspective to some older concepts.

Hi, Todd,

Why would a physician be required to take a Medical Terminology course? Having taught that course myself, I would suggest that the student test out

If the student has to stay in the course for some reason, I would ask him/her for examples or more explanation of terms and concepts that are difficult for students.
