Low Participation

How do you handle a student who wont participate in class groups well because of a stutter, nervousness, shyness etc....

I had a problem in my last class with the students calling out the answers to questions. I started using my roster to call on one at a time and that worked well. I let students opt out at times, but did not see the opt out used consistently by the same students.

Hi Duanna,
You can't make them participate. You can only encourage them to participate. You may want to have a firm private conversation with the student and let them know the importance of team work/group projects on the job. If the talk does not help the student, the student must be graded accordingly.

As a new instructor, I find that a lot of my students will let the "talkers" answer all questions asked in class. It's not because they do not know the answer; instead, it's because they just aren't quick enough! I take a randomness approach to our discussions and ask those that seldom talk specific questions. I encourage participation and when we do group work, I usually have one of these students be the speaker for the group.
