Center stage students

I have had success by using these students as tutors for students who are behind.

I was thinking the same thing. These are students that do well and want to help and be more than just a part of the class so use them to help other students that maybe behind in class.

Hi Paul,
Great way to give the quiet student an opportunity as well. The outspoken student will take over if you allow he/she to do so.

In my Algebra classes, the students are shy enough to make any statements whatsoever. Sometimes, there is one student who is outspoken in solving the class example problems. To help the quiet students, if the center stage student speaks out too soon, I just mention "hold onto that thought" and I continue my explanation and check with the quieter students when the explanation is complete. I then circle back with the center-stage student to either reinforce or correct.

I have never thought of making a center stage student a obsever, that is a great Idea, I never really knew how to handle students that were center stage, other than to tel them prvately that I liked the energy but the other students needed a n oppertuaty to answee, But know I can't wait to try making them an obsever, Thank you

I liked this idea as well. It will keep them laser focused on the task at hand as opposed to being the center of attention.

I think using these students as tutors is a great idea. It keeps them busy and also makes them feel important and useful in the classroom.

Hi Maureen,
The obsever will calm this student down, and you should see an increase in her grade as well from taking on this role.

I have had the classic example of a center stage student for several course. She fits the description to a "T" however, she is not especially knowledgeable. She distracts more than listens. I think the best role for this individual may be observer, because she might then listen more.

I found this section to be very helpful.

I love this idea, because it takes their energy and diverts it into a positive for the class and the individual struggling.
