Student complaints can be dealt with through communicating with other instructors, student services, or opening the complaint to class discussions. In many cases, if a student complains about something, I try to make them see the "other side of the coin". Most times complaints can be resolved in the class without the intervention of other departments.

If I see an issue brewing with a particular student I either ask them to stay after class and chat or call them. Then I LISTEN. Also after a few classes I will ask the students to do a plus/minus evaluation of the class so far and for the - column, I ask for suggestions for improvement.

take the student aside give a little extra attention show him what hes doing wrong in a constructive manner .
then explain why its important to do it correctly

I tell students that i am here to help them not make thet life harder. The students tend to confide in me once this is done.

I try to tell students that i am here to help them not to cause them trouble. The students find that when they have someone is on there side they can confide in me.

I like getting into a well controlled ad guided class discussion. I like getting the students personally involved in their training.

Patricia,
While it is critical to keep the relationship between instructors and students to the professional distance that is required, we can solve many issues simply by listening to the students. Often I think the bulk of their frustration is from feeling that no one is listening which they equate to as no one is caring. When properly mentoring students you can be friendly and supportive without being their peer friend. Sensing this attention and genuine concern will help to eliminate most complaints or minimize them to a manageable level. When the students see you as a real person who is interested in their success they are more apt to talk through problems and come to positive solutions.
I find the students who are the most challenging need no more attention than any other, the only difference is in the focus of your attention to them and the way you present your concern or solution. There is a positive side to everything if you just look through the haze to see it....Your attitude properly set can make all the difference...and remember what we do speaks louder than anything we say....

To deal with challening student the instructor must be very patient and collective. It is very important to take the time to reconized the student issues. These students most time are not aware of their issues.

Hello Robert,
You are on point! Policies MUST be enforced. By enforcing policies, you are creating a positive atmosphere.

Hi Jim,
Expectations must be known. Grading should be consistent for all students.
Patricia

Some of the strategies that instuctors can use to manage the class is by insuring they are following campus policy, being observant of the class and their surrondings, and using appropriate techniques to work with the students to achieve success for everyone involved.

Clarify your expectations during lecture and lab times. Be sure to fully explain the grading and ensure you grade all students the same.

Hello James,
What a great tactic to use to deal with complainers. I use this tactic as well, and it does work.
Patricia

Hello Bernard,
You have great characteristics as an instructor. You seem to be a good listener, an effective monitor, extremelely helpful, and very personable. Continue to shine!
Patricia

start with a good sylabus, good sop's, and stick to what you have explained. excellent knowledge of the course material, courtesy, and answer all questions to the best of your abilty,if you cannot tell them you will have an answer for that question by the end of the day.these are things to do that are not hard to accomplish. If I have a constant complainer I ask the student to please be part of the solution, not the problem.this I heard a long time ago, and have used it myself for years, and works for me almost all the time. You will gain their respect if you are consistent, period!

Hello Eric,
You must be fair to all of your students. No one students should ever receive special treatment. The minute students realize you have favorites, you have just ruined your reputation. Treat every student the same, and you will always come out on top.
Patricia

Hello Jim,
I've learned over the years, it is best not to sugar coat anything with your students. Honesty is key. I've always treated my students, the way I would want to be treated. I've watched some instructors talk down to students, which is wrong. Students are people too.
Patrica

One strategy that I use is to be involved with the class, I wonder around the class as I lecture, so I can monitor what is going on with each group. By keeping everyone involved I can keep an open line of communication, so students can feel confident about speaking to me. They know I will listen to what they say, and be as helpful as I can be.

Showing that all have the same rights is important. Getting them talking as a team works well and I also say peer pressure does wonders to help control any plase. We all are equal and are important so I work with them all not just the dificult ones.

Be open and honest with the students. Treat them as you would like to be treated if you were in their position. Find out the reasons they are being challenged and aknowledge them and work towards a resolution to create a good learning experience for them.
