being an effective monitor

Walking around the class and teaching gives you the ability to see what's going on in the class and interact with the students instead of standing at desk and talking all day interaction is key.

What a difference this would make to my lectures. Just moving around the room (instead of remaining in the front at my desk) will also keep me more focused and alert as to who's doing what in my classroom.

Hi Jose,
Reinforcement is always a positive experience. Students appreciate reinforcement. As educators, we must do all we can for our students. Student/teacher interaction is very important. During the interaction process you can determine quickly whether your students are grasping concepts or not.

During the class after i do my cooking demo i try to go back to each group and reinforce what was covered during the demo, i find this to be effective because it usually takes to times for the students to grasp the information and in this way you become very interactive with the students and that makes for effective monitoring.

i believe as an effective monitor, i should be "all over the room" and having an omni-presence in the classroom at all time.

Hello David,
The back of the classroom tends to work well for me. It seems like everyone is on point, when I instruct from the back of the room.
Patricia

I agree with the the statements made about moving around the room, especially moving to the back of the room. Moving to the back gives me a good perspective of who is taking notes, and making an effort to learn.

Hi Dale,
Isn't that a simple strategy that works every time. That is an OLD disciplining strategy.

Hello Stan,
According to studies, students do stay more attentive when the class is being monitored. Continue to do a great job and engage your students. :-)

When I walk around the room during theory lectures, I can engage the students and they are more prone to stay attentive.

I have always found that if you just walk over and stand close to trouble makers or cheaters that usually breaks up group and the pattern.

Hi Glen,
Absolutely, we must roam so that our students will know that they must be on it at all times. The minute we relax, students will relax too.
Patricia

I have found that if the instructor is constantly roaming the room, the students will be more attentive.

Hi Steve,
When students know that you are monitoring they will be more actively invovled. It is important to be an effective monitor.

Hello Jill,
Nicely said. My institution has a strict dress code as well and due to my many years of experience I am just like a hawk when someone is in violation. Experience is the best teacher in all areas.
Patricia

I have found that being an effective monitor improves with experience. Our school has a strict dress code, and I recall how when I first started teaching how hard it was to be cognizant of the uniform violations. It was overwhelming to notice all the details. Now I can spot a missing neckerchief or unbuttoned jacket much more quickly.

I agree totally Mr. D. When I walk about the room during lecture, it seems as though group discussion ratchets up a level and students who are typically quiet may make a quick comment or ask a question. Standing at the front of the room during an entire lecture or exercise is boring to the students as well as myself.

Hello Anthony,
I love being highly interactive with my students, and I love walking around so that I know what is going on. Students can take advantage of instructors who sit at their desk all day long.
