challenges
after working with a new student and you come to the conclusion that the field is not for them based on them strugling and not grasping the meterial. you bring it to there attention and they still choose to continue. i then try to prepare them for a much easier area of the field, but not as high as their expectations. would you say thats wrong.
Hi Dee,
I concur. Everyone is not cut out to do everything. Find a better fit for the student.

If they are struggling with the material and concepts they should be redirected to other career options. I think they would stay frustrated.
Hi Rami,
Any learning is better than none at all. Reviews are good for students. Most students appreciate reviews.

Hi Rami,
How can a student complete a program of study if they are failing courses?
Patricia
If they can learn a little of the basics again from the review...then that is better than nothing.
It is better to complete a program of study than to get thrown out of school because of failing too many courses.
Hi James,
I like the psychology that you utilize. How smart of you. Continue to be creative as an instructor.

Hi Chris,
I agree, there is at least one in every class I teach, so I get to handle this often. I teach a class on high performance engine building, this requires advanced engine theory and engine math. Some students run when I put a formula on the board....well not exactly but the run away as far as participation. I have to be careful not to make them feel like they are different. I pretend this subject matter is very advanced and difficult to grasp...what they are struggling with is normal and everyone has trouble with it. This makes them feel better and at least gets them invloved again. I then stick to the basics...reviewing a little of the basics first....then starting to go deeper... back to the lesson for today. Sometimes it helps them learn...sometimes it just makes them feel better, either way I don't want anyone leaving my class feeling dumb. If they can learn a little of the basics again from the review...then that is better than nothing.
Hi Chris,
No Chris, I would not say that's wrong. I do the same thing, and I have known other educators to do the same. Every program is not for everyone. At least, we are trying to match the student with a program that we know they can probably succeed in. It is better to complete a program of study than to get thrown out of school because of failing too many courses.
