I have found that by listening and talking to students camly even under heated situations they usually understand there fault and realize you are not trying to single them out, but you are serious about maintaining order in your class.
Hi Andrew,
What a great psychological approach to this. It makes sense. As I was reading the response I visualized myself as to how I look when I am angry.
Patricia
whaen dealing with an angry student i always try to have a window behind me and let me explain. i used to work were they had mirrors behind the customers service people and when an angry customer would come in they would see them selfs in the mirror and calm down, most people do not like they way they look when they are angry and once they are calm you can resolve the issue a lot easier. the window most of the time act like a mirror.
Hi George,
Nicely said. I always tell my new instructors to use a very calming approaching. If you as the instructor barks, the student is going to try to bark louder.
Patricia
Being Calm with the student will help to calm them down while you are speaking to them and diffuse the situation. Also, taking to them privately may help too.
Being calm tends to calm down the excited individual to whom you are speaking.
Hi James,
Simply, practice what you preach!
Patricia
I agree fuuly that work well
Rob,
I agree that talking with students calmly defuses a situation. I also believe that many of the professional standards we expect from our students should be demonstrated by all of the staff and faculty. Lead by example: if you expect someone to do a job, you should be prepared to show them the proper way.
Hi Rob,
It is amazing what a calm demeanor can do to make things better. When at all possible always try to handle situations calmly. I know the positive results of calmness.
