Dealing with challanging students
I find it works many times to have a private discussion with a student to make them aware that you are unhappy with the distracting behavior alot of time they might not even have known that there behavior was being distracting to both you and your class and they stop.
Hi Alan,
Nicely responded to! You are on point. It seems like you really have a knack for dealing with challenging students.

I agree with this tactic 100 percent. If you admonish a student in front of the class it will only leave a bad taste with not only that student but the rest of the class too. However praising that student in front of the class brings a positive note to that student and filters down to the rest of the class. If the student is being difficult, it is best to have a one on one talk after class (whether it's outside the classroom or behind closed doors in your office) to find out what is his or her particular problem. This way they will feel more comfortable and relaxecd to explain to you their situation.
Hello Wing,
What a great belief to have! Students really enjoy being praised publicly, but they want to be reprimanded behind closed doors, and really and truly that is the way it should be. I too follow this tactic. It has worked for 20 years.

I always pull students aside and speak with them one-on-one if they're problematic. I have always believed in praising in public and punishing in private.
I agree and I also ask them to observe someone they believe has a good knowledge of the course and see how their behavior is similar or different
Hi Trevor,
It is nothing like a private conversation between you and the student. Generally, the student is very receptive and appreciative.
