Dealing with students in today times

The student that you may see today having pressure from all sides of life to do well and for you to help is a great challenge.

Hi Craig,
I fully understand! I deal with these type of students every day. I tell them education is the key to a better life for them.
Patricia

Most of the students today have student loans, barely enough money for gas or food, a car that many of us would not want to own, family problems, and can barely make the rent. Every so often they will think their best course of action is to quit school and concentrate on getting a job to make some money. These students need to be made aware of the fact that this short term solution will not be their best option in the long run. I have talked to some of these students, and unfortunately there are some that do not make the best choice concerning their future.

Hello Dianne,
It is hard to imagine. We are some of our students ONLY cheerleader.
Patricia

Hi Daniel,
Compliments really do mean the world to some people and others can care less about them.
Patricia

Dianne,

I worked at a college that had a lot of students there with no sense of compliment or how to take it. Some of them would seem to actually rebel towards giving them a compliment and some of them would just break down in tears because it meant so much.

I believe that many of these students have never had someone in their corner. I just had a student comment that he has never had anyone say that they were proud of him-- can you imagine?

Jose,

this is a great response. I have had so many students tell me they are working full time, single parents and tryint to get through school. In these and many other instances we can share our personal experiences to show them that it can be done. I like your last statement and use it with students who are thinking of quiting. They joined school to succeed in life. To make somethign of themselves and show their kids a better life. If they quit, they have not proven anything to themselves or their kids.

Hi Joseph,
We do tend to baby these grown folks way too much, at some point, they must grow up and be held accountable. We need to prepare these students for the realisim of things in the workplace.
Patricia

the biggest thing I see today is the students have been way to protected in their upbringing and expect someone to always bail them out...which usualley happens...thus giving them no sense of accountability...we all deal with the same stuff everyday. As an instuctor I tell them this the way of it and this happens to everyone sooner or later, not the end of the world and everything will be ok.

Hi Jose,
I've experienced having counseled many students with various personal problems, and you're right the first thing that the want to let go of is school. Really, school should be the last thing they let go of. I talk with these students at great length to convince them to stay in school. I've saved some, and I've lost some. It sounds like you give your students a good speil about holding on to school.
Patricia

The things that affect Students is no different to the things that affect all of us at any given time in our lives, therefore we as instructors must be willing to listen and provide leadership to these students who probably are facing a challenge for the first time in their lives and the first thing that comes to their mind is, ( I think i am going to drop out of school because it is too much to handle ) so, that is when we as instructors must be there for our students and guide them and always remind them that the reason they joined the school is to succed in their life.

There is a lot of all kinds of pressure in our daily lives today, mainly psycological ones. if you read the paper ,if you watch the media ,there are no more good news but bad catastrophic things happening every sigle second,we are imbbeded in a realm of trouble, and my problems-are-bigger-than-yours-attitude is dominant today,so as educators,we should create a positive atmosphere that challenges positive attitudes,if we try to compete our sunday morning preacher's motivational speeches we will certainly get more from our students in our classroom settings.

Hello Danny,
How exhausting!! I fully understand your response. It is amazing how many problems students have today. My moto is to give out, but not give up on our students. We must continue to be there for our students.
Patricia

I thank God that I'm not a young student today. I still can't imagine having all the issues that some of these students have in class today. It is very time consuming to deal with a large class that has a multiple of issues every day.

Hi Gary,
Some of our students do come to school with various types of pressure. We as instructor has to be has helpful as possible.
