quit students
Getting to know the student, would help have better understanding, how to imploment his experance with other students and contribute discussion in class..
Hi Michael,
An interesting question is a good way to make students open up.
Patricia
Hi, I teach an automotive course, and one of the ways that I get to know my students is that I ask them what brand of car do they prefer? I get all the normal answers such as Ford, Chevy, Honda, and so on. This not only gets them to open up, but also allows me to give them a little insight. I tell them that I am an AMC guy. This means I like "All Makes Combined". And then I explain If you go to work in an auto repair shop, You might have to work on any car that comes in the door! Having said this they start to discuss this fact. So we start connecting with some of our past experiences.
Hello Ron,
I like your tactics. I am sure your students appreciate you.
Patricia
In my techinical business classes, many of my students border on being 'quit students.' I often remind them about the entrepreneur's attitude towards failure: failure is only a step in learning how to get it right.
In a pinch, I play a Youtube of Rogers and Astaire doing 'pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.'
more seriously, I use multiple low scoring quizes as learning tools. We spend a lot of time going over their results and correcting mistakes. This allows learning from mistakes before taking a more 'expensive' exam.
Hello Diane,
It is fine to be quiet. Most of the time, students appreciate quiet students, but a quiet student needs to speak up when necessary.
Patricia
I think this is very important because as a quiet student myself when I was in school, the more the teacher the got to know me the more confident and comfortable I became. It helped me come out of my shell.
Hi Shannon,
I do the same things. Have you ever had a quiet student that handled you from a distant, and it was extremely challenging to build a relationship with the student?
Patricia
I make contact and establish rapport with them.
Hi Harold,
What tactics do you use to get to know your students? Do you feel rapport building helps with ready-to-quit students?
Patricia
