challanging students

the information in this course will help me deal with this

Hi Cindy,
As soon as they show out, have a private, firm conversation with them. On the second offense I immediately have them removed from the class because they were told this the first go round. You have to do what you say, you are going to do, otherwise they will not take you serious.

Patricia,
Can you tell me how you have " nipped it in the bud! Let them know immediately that you are not going to tolerate their behavior. Once they realize you are not playing, their behavior changes for the better."
As a new instructor, I would appreciate feedback and any techniques you are willing to share on this! Thanks in advance!

Hi Julia,
I especially like bellringers. A minute before the bell rings, students must express what they learned in the class and drop the explanation in the basket at the door as they are walking out.

I found this section of the module helpful for there were some worthwhile strategies to consider. For example, minute papers. It's been a while since I've done this -- may be time to resurrect this strategy for inattentive students. I am still struggling with overall classroom monitoring for it is assumed that ALL students will respond and the hard reality is such that not ALL students will. This concerns me greatly because retention is impacted significantly. Will have to revisit this area in greater depth...

Hello Richard,
It appears you want to help your students both personally and professionally. As educators, we do have to be very caring.

I try to find out any common ground and/or what seems to be irritating them. Sometimes it is home or other issues outside of school.

When it is classroom related, I ask them what they expect and how could I operate within the confines of their needs.

Hi David,
Absolutely, nip it in the bud!! Let them know immediately that you are not going to tolerate their behavior. Once they realize you are not playing, their behavior changes for the better.

I have found that the best way to handle challenging students is to take the time to handle them. Many times, because they are difficult, they get brushed off. This becomes almost a defense mechanism...so they try it all the time.

Hello Robert,
What tactics will you use from the course to help you deal with challenging students? What tactics have you used in the past to deal with challenging students?
Patricia
