By offering an essay test that may have 10 possible essays but the student only has to answer 5. Also, by seperating the students with a seat between them if possible. If offering a miultiple choice test you can scramble the questions or provide several different versions

i think that is a grate idea that way copie from the other person if they do they are going to get them rong and you as a teacher will know wene someone is cheating.

I generally ask students to put away the study materials before I hand out the quiz. I also make sure they are not sitting too close. Finally, I make sure I am visible to everybody in class, thus reducing the temptation to cheat.

I have different versions of the test

As an online instructor I have some online capabilities that can discourage cheating but there are limitations to the system as well. We have a tool called Originality Verification that can come up with a similarity score from your student submission and anything that was every posted on the web anywhere. This is nice because it discourages plagiarism. On the other hand there are limitations. We do have quizzes in the system. I have to go on blind faith that the person taking the quiz is actually the student on the other end of the computer. I always try to integrate real world scenarios in my chats and I always stress the importance of understanding how to use information for your future rather than memorizing it. I try to create a link to the importance of learning and understanding.

Hi Leonard,
Awesome tactics to have in place to deter cheating. Instructors need to be mobile when students are testing.

I find that the larger the class size, the more potential there is for cheating. With my smaller classes I use only one version of the exam and make sure there is ample room between students. I have used multi-version exams for large class sizes and make it well known to them that I am keeping an eye. They always laugh but before each exam I always tell them there are no "lifelines" so they are not able to phone a friend or poll the audience. Also, to keep their eyes on their own paper as the person next to them knows less than they do.

i hold all tests before handing them back to students until all students have taken the test and i have all my students put all materials (books, papers, phones)ect away before test start

I have the students remove all books and bags from their tables. Then I move to different spots in the class so the students know that I'm not going to be in the same spot all the time.

Hi Philemon,
I can tell you monitor your students well to deter cheating. Making a sacrificial lamb out of a student does really get all the other students attention.

1. Move around the class during testing. 2. If the desks have no dividers, move students to create enough social distance. 3.The desks should be clear of all other material other than test material.
4. If one is found cheating when every precaution has been taken, make it public that very time and give him/her a zero. This sounds a warning to him/her and the rest. The cheater won't repeat and no one else will cheat.

Make sure you are asking all sort of questions on the exam. All multiple choice, T/F make it too easy. Make sure you ask fill in the blank, essay questions, etc.. The environment is also important. Do not allow students to sit so close that they can look at each others papers. Make sure distractions (book bags, books) are out of the way. Finally, do not give the same exams each semester. That way, students can not give exams to each other.

Hi Maria,
Separation is always a good way to deter cheating. I simply let my students know that I am watching them.

Multiple versions of a test, essay questions or a combination of the two.

When I have a small class, I require the students to separate themselves from other students to prevent looking at someone's exam.

I generally ask the student to put all book away and I make the test or quiz with 2 versions.

ways of reducing student cheating include :
1.prepare your self better for your class.
2.do not move on until your students understant the content.
3.prepare ways to make sure they are understanding and learning the principles objectives of the class.
4.be strict the day of the exam concerning the rules of taking an exam.

By walking around the class during the exam and closely monitoring students during the complete exam. You can also have students put all belongings in an area where they don't have access to test materials. Include subjective test questions (essays and short answers).

Hi Chad,
Great tactics to use to minimize cheating! Walking while students are testing is key!
