dealing with a sneaky student

I have a student that will smile and talk very nicely, but will conplain to the dean about staff. How to handle that. This student does it to many teachers

Hi Andrew,
Students that are labeled as "trouble makers", I like to get to know these students for myself and not prejudge them. I like giving each student the same opportunity. I have had students that will cause problems in other instructors classes, but they will be an angel in my class.

I imagine that eventually the word will get around that this student is a "trouble maker" and his/her credibility will quickly wane. A was stated by other forum members, meeting with administration and peers will reveal a lot about the studen's mode of operation. You can then develop a comprehensive plan to adress the issue with administration, if necessary.

John has the right answer for this student. A meeting or potential meeting will clear this up. Otherwise I would dismiss it not having validity, not let it bother me, and treat this student just like everyone else, noting their need for attention and personal discussions with the dean.

Hi John,
Great suggestion! Students behavior normally changes for the better whenever they have to have a conversation with higher authority.

There is no reason that you cannot have a conversation with the dean and on the next occasion of this student complaining about the staff, have him/her question the student and get details then ask the student if they would be willing to have a meeting in the deans office with the dean and the staff member to help the dean improve staff/student relationships. When offered this as a solution, the student will probably decline and may stop complaining.
