Glancing
Glancing/cheating is a problem with a few in every class. I separate or ask them to take the quiz elsewhere, changing seat assignments or changing the quiz itself helps. How does everyone else handle it?
I am a fan of two things: using open ended questions that use the terminology required in context, but ask the students to state and defend an opinion or an example of the concept in practice.
Since I'm most concerned with how they'd apply the concept in my class (a general education class, not a career specific course) rather than the specific vocabulary they have less of a desire to cheat, and it is fairly obvious when they give the exact same opinion as another student.
Another thing I like is what Matthew suggested. Having a couple of versions of the exam that I hand out so that no one can be sure that their neighbors paper could help them.
i have found that having everyone spread out and get comfy helps. with a small class they can really put some distance between themselves and i can watch what transpires during the exams :)
Try handing out different versions of the same quiz, or with the questions shuffled. It can become pretty obvious who is cheating, and there is a certain amount of satisfaction if a "glancer" discovers their mistake half way through...
Keeping plenty of space between the students, and walking around the classroom to let everyone know i am watching, really helps prevent cheating.
