Hi Jacinda,
I've experienced this. I work with the student in this case, however, I do deduct points for the students attendance and participation grade just like I would with any other student, but I do not allow the student's attendance to get them withdrawn from school. I stress as long as you are trying, and you do not have ANY absences I will work with you.

Hi Jacinda,
There are some instances where you do need to evaluate things based on a case-by-case basis.

Jacinda,
Your don't mention how late but it sounds like it isn't an excessive amount. I think that one of the advantages of dealing with adult (or almost adult) students is to help them understand the idea that treating people fairly does not mean treating them all the same. It is reasonable to take personal circumstances into account when addressing situations like this. If the individual involved is otherwise a productive member of the class and her coming in late doesn't disrupt the class,it should'nt present a problem. It is also important for the class to know that you expect this student to meet the same standards as far as assignments, etc. without negatively affecting the class flow or other students ability to succeed.
