Challanging students
The best way to deal with challenging student is to interact closely with them. Sometimes they are just looking for attention and for someone to care about the. Of course one student should not take all of an instructors attention, but some need it more than others.
I have tried to get to know each student every term. I try to learn each student's name and talk to them before and after class. I think it reduces problems when they have a sense that you care about them as a person.
I agree with you Steve, when students feel that you care and are committed to their learning, they become more invested.
I agree with you Gena, a bit of extra attention is sometimes all the student needs to know you are there for them.
