Anger as Defense / Lazy Mechanism
I feel some students use "anger" with the school to justify thhier actions or inactions (lazy-town!) "Why sould I do this work if the school can't be bothered to issue me a parking pass"
It is so importaint to diffuse this anger and refocus responsibility back on the student!
Hi Charles,
As educaors, we must be very effective listeners. It is amazing how simply listening can diffuse a situation. Students want to know that they can come talk to you, and you will fully listen and guide them.

Sometimes, treating this situation as an opportunity to listen provides the instructor with a student whose attention is focused such that important course content can be effectively communicated along with guidance for the student's taking responsibility. Many times, a student's coming to me assures that I truly have his/her attention.
Hi David -
I agree with you. I think students will get angry when you call them on their unwillingness to do what is assigned. If you hold students accountable and bring the responsibility back to them, they have no reason to be angry and I refuse to take the blame for their laziness.

Hi David,
As educators, we must work hard at ensuring that our students learn how to take responsibility. It is immature for one to act out because he or she feels something is not right. We have to teach students how to work at getting things resolved...anger is not the solution.
