Handling Both Disruptive and Cheating Students
I have mentioned this before, I seperate each student regardless during all test. After 3 years of teaching and of course I was a student along time ago, I have seen ever attempt at both behaviors. At times, I feel like a mom watching and correcting each behavior. You do listen and try to either help or correct the situation. All behavior's do need to be dealt with care. Do bring in a Supervisor when confronting with a student.
I like to walk the room and observe. This seems to work well
A student reported that he had seen one student helping another during a minor test. I took both aside later and said that the test they had just taken was not that important but if I was ever to see anyone cheating on an important test I would have to get both dropped from school. I told both that I liked and respected them and that I was confident they could get through without cheating. They did.
I know I have had trouble with knowing if a student is cheating, Once I was pretty sure so I approached the student and said “I’m not sure why you are looking in your note book but you are giving the appearance of cheating."The student said I not cheating .I said I am sure you are not but If you were standing were I am how would you think it looks. The student apologized and the behavior did not repeat for the rest of the course.
Hi Deidra,
It is always a good idea to have your supervisor present when dealing with cheating students especially. I am not a big believer of having a supervisor present whenever you need to handle a disruptive student, but cheating can be a very sensitive topic...a witness is needed just in case.
