Managing Student Behavior
Good preparation is the best "defense" against challenging student behavior. Always have more prepared than you think you need for each lesson or activity.

I like to have at least 2 day's worth of work ready on a given day just in case I finish the lesson early, I will review or begin the next day's lesson.

Preparation is the key. Being over prepared may be a little extreme, but being ready to give life experiences brings relevance to what is being discussed. Ensuring students are able to give relavance to their questions is the best way to manage possible "outrageous" behavior

You have to do all you can to pull the silent student in, if you let them go speechless, they will.

Engaging and making the (shy/silent) students feel they are part of the discussion is also very important. When I have a student who does not participate I give him/her the opportunity to share his/her personal acheivements in the field with the class and how it can be applied to the lesson we are covering in class and that helps build his/her self-esteem and public speaking skills.
