Reducing student cheating
I have issues with this subject with only a small percentage of my students. I would like to know more about how to deal with it.
Hi Todd,
I have also found that if they have to keep an eye on you, they are contemplating cheating because they want to know where you are.

walking about in class and being near the back of the room helps, i have found that if the students cant keep an eye on you they will have less of a chance to cheat.
I put my expectations forth in a clear and direct manner. Any violations are dealt with immediately and consistently. It doesn't take more than one or two quizes for my students to know I'm watching and I'm serious about cheating.
Depending on the class size, I will space the students out, if the class is to large for that I will print different versions of the same test,(ie. your #1 is my #3 and his #2) or something along those lines. That way it makes it harder to look over. Also I ask everyone to clear their desk, so that there is no where to hide a cheat sheet.
Hi Brian,
Students need to know that they are being watched during test time. Just by letting them know they are being watched, it helps with minimizing cheating.

In test situations, I use more than one test for the students. I try to use the same test questions, just alter the order so that they think they have completely different tests. I also do not tell them that they have different tests, let them figure that out!!
When it is test time I make sure that I watch them by glancing around the room from time to time. Sometimes I will walk around the room in between the aisles to let them know that I am present. I will stop at someone's desk and ask if they have any questions or how are they doing on the test so far. I also tell them if they cheat then they are only hurting themselves, they might get a good grade but have they really learned what needed to?
