Student Cheating
I have always walked around in the classroom. However, in taking this lesson, I realize that it's better to just stand in the back of the classroom. You are right though, they are already nervous, so why make them more nervous by walking around the class. Great point!
Hi Jennifer,
How did you handle things with the cheating student? Was the student reprimanded?
Patricia
I recently had a problem with a student in a small class cheating. I confronted the entire class and told them that the cheating student needed to contact me within two days to discuss the issue. The cheating student did contact me, we worked out the problem, and now the whole class is nervous taking tests b/c they are worried I'll think they are cheating.
In my class room we use a similar method. The test are a,b,c,d and the questions are shuffled to deture cheating. While the students are testing I position myself in the room so I can see all students. This is done to moniter the class and to clarify any questions that might be asked during testing.
I think using a A and B version of the test is a good way to diminish cheating... we also use computerized testing that allows for each test to be unique. Everyone has the same test bank, but the questions come up randomly mixed... so if the student attempt to cheap, their grade will suffer tremendously.
It is a good way to deter students from cheating, as well as assist in the overall grading, since it is done on the computer, it automatically grades all assignments.
If the class is larger than 5 a another teacher comes to the class to assist with monitoring the students. So their are two instructors, one in front of the class room and one in back of the class room. Most of the time I have an A and B test ,which helps control students looking at each others answers.
Hi Cliff,
Make sure if you do stand in the back, position yourself so that you can see all students.

I haven't had an any issues with cheating with my classes since they are so small. However, in taking this lesson I know have an idea of where to start if I should ever have this problem in my class. This lesson gave great points on how to hand cheating!!
