Your silent but cooperative student

The particular student is well behaved always cooperative.
This student never disagrees with the instructor. The tests scores are failing 95% of the time. Over all gradeis just passing. When asked if there is a problem there is none and no further discussion. The instructor is not able to assertain any information from this student as to what the problem may be. In the classroom setting the student appears to be on task and attentive.
Home work has been completed. Student is always quiet and cooperative but doesnot speak up unless
asked. The student has been placed in group sessions without success. Has anyone has a similar experience?

HI,
I have had a student somewhat similar and what Was done is that I absolutely asked to speak to that individual alone(one-on-one) and asked questions. The assignments were presented, and also asked about the small group discussion. The individual began to share facts about comprehension and someone was assisting with the work assignments and the individual had so many other personal issues that was going on. I began to make referral for that individual and suggested that we were available to assist. That indivdual began to receive some of the referrals that was presented and realized that extra help was greatly needed.
Thank you

I wonder at the particular culture of that student. In certain cultures (Asian is the one lurking in the back of my mind just now), speaking up, asking questions, and debating authorities is out of their program.

I would try working one-on-one with such a student. Observe them doing the work (a strategy that works really well with mathematics) -- what is their thought process? -- are they missing something. Perhaps, you can diagnose what the problem is for them.

Some people are just shy, quiet, and or just like being independent. I have a student similar to that one, she stated to me that "she's here to get here lesson and go home". She very socialable in the hallways and during breaks but in the classroom setting her learning switch if you will comes on and thats just what she does. There are no sidebar conversations nothing.

Hi Luis,
What do you feel that test scores have to do with silent/cooperative student?
Patricia

Did this student entrance test scores for this level of class satisfactory? old test scores?

Hi Cheryl,
Yes. You are really on point describing this type of student. They are as sweet as can be, but academically they struggle. I try to provide as much one-on-one help to this type of student as possible. You just want to bend over backward for this type of student because of their demeanor. I also make it a point to build a strong rapport this type of student, but it has its challenges because this type of student is almost always distant.
