Is a student tired or silent?

It can be difficult to tell which students are simply tired and do not share many characteristics with the silent student as it is outlined by the text. The tired student is one that is best counseled independently. I ask the student if they are working more hours or studying too much. Many of my students are working mothers and they will say that their kids are keeping them up. Either way, you are encouraging the student to get enough sleep to be prepared for class.

Our class also is a late class and we are set in class for a 5 hour block until 10:30. So we play review games or sometimes I rotate students and let them teach from the powerpoint and I'm a student so I ask questions and we get to role play. It usually helps everyone stay awake and also helps them remember information since its fun to teach.

You can also do group discussions on current events. Most evening students do not get to watch the news. I find that having a discussion for the last hour of class wakes and shakes the class up. Students respond well to class discussion. I use the internet news media to generate topics for discussions. Some local and others national and international events are covered. International discussion are enjoyed the most by my adult students.

Hi Joseph,
I like it! The future is going to allow you to reap great benefits is what I constantly tell my students.

A lot of my students work to pay for school so I try to impress on them what the current job gives them versus what their career will give them, don't give up the future for the now.

Hi Phillip,

I recall my days as a student. I was tired a lot and silent because I was tired. I always get to know my students as individuals. They are unique and often times just need someone to listen. I'm a good listener. I will tell them what has worked for me. I point out that all of us are given the same 24 hours. What we do with those 24 hours is up to us. Time management is crucial. And taking time for ourselves.

This is my big task. I teach until 10 pm and many of the students have worked and some have children as well. I am trying different things to keep us all awake such as groups, goal assignments and some times a longer break with a walk and air.

Hi Phillip,
Our students juggle a lot. We have to try to teach them time management as well.
