Angry Students
I have learned that angry students are rarely angry about school items. Usually they have displaced anger over issues in their personal lives.
Recently had a student in my face yelling and cursing. It seemed as if there was no way out but I maintained my cool and kept on discussing the situation and asking him how we wants to resolve the situation. Eventually it seemed that he was just testing to see if I would get scared and back down or provoke him and when neither happened, he walked away. Of course he is no longer a student but at least it ended without any physical harm.
Hi Cheri,
You're right! Calmness is key! The louder you bark, the student will bark even louder. I too always use a very calm demeanor.

I agree with that too. I feel if you let them know that you care about their success and not give up on them, they usually will come around.
Hi Jeanne,
I would agree. People take out their anger on the closest person who is often the teacher. I recognize anger almost immediately. I try to circumvent it by talking to the student after class and remaining calm myself. I would do this with my own children as they were growing up. The calmer I was the calmer they became.
