Anger

My question is this, what if a student comes straight out and says he is furious with his girl friend. That his anger really has nothing to do with the class, but he is very angry?

Well I have delt with this before and I asked both of them to stay after class and then let each tell there side of the story. Then I try to make a compermise so they can both go away with something acccomplished.

I can see both sides to this. If you take five minutes to let the students decompress this may help them get started. However, if you let one then you may have to let all. I think it should be handled on your knowledge of your students.

Hi Kenneth,

I have experienced this in my class previously. Without trying to sound like "Dr. Phil", I allowed him to express his feelings. I happened to be teaching a statistics class, so I was actually able to relate some of this complaints, for example, relating to spending habits to the course content and it quickly defused the situation.

Kind Regards,
Lee

I think an instructor should let an angry student vent, listen to what they say, and offer assistance with student resources support. Remind the student that violence doesn't solve anything and that there are other ways to solve an issue.
