The class I teach requires students to spread their books out a little, so it's been hard to catch cheaters. For the coming term I've got a large class, so I'm going to tell everyone to make a conscious effort to protect their papers. Usually students that are friendly will allow themselves to look at each others papers, so I believe I will just quietly personally address any students I see with their papers practically in the face of the person next to them.
The way it works for me is, …. I mention before and after given the test that Cheating is not tolerated on any time, and also I walk around the class and sit for couple minutes in the back of the class where the students can’t see me. Most automatically generated test software will scramble questions for you automatically and will allow you to create multiple versions of the same test with ease.

The two tests idea has worked well for me also. Our sytem also will scramble the tests automatically!

Rearranging tests in random order is a practice I use regularly and is done automatically within the system I use.

When I do the test I will make up two different tests and then alternate those test from 1 to the other. What I do is just put the same test in a different order. This always seems to work.
