Helping students

Students need a lot of added help in the classroom. Not all of them learn the same way. Focus on the different learning capabilities, and acheive to reach each student.

Hi Cristy,
You have what's causing him the problems his attendance and sleeping during class time. If he attends regularly and pay attention in class, his grades will improve.

I have tried having the students make flash cards of the key terms for each unit as homework (that way they have made their own study aid). I have also implemented extra review sessions. These techniques really worked for one of my challenged students but the other student that I was worried about just failed another test.

Does anyone have any practical ideas for how to work with this type of student? He has missed several classes and often sleeps in my class.

Hi Jennifer,
We use a similar learning style test for each brand new student so that it is determined how the student best learns. We utilize the assessment based on the dominant learning style if the student is ever having academic challenges.

At my institution, all students complete a DISC profile as a way to determine learning styles/personalites. All instructors are provided this information for the students. It helps instructors determine the best way to deal with all students.
D=Dominant
I=Influential
S=Stablizer
C=Conscientious

Hi Regina,

At my institution in order to determine a student's learning style, every new student takes a learning style test within the first week they enroll so that whenever they begin to have difficulties, we know how they best learn in order to help them grasp the material.

Hi Shirley,
I totally agree and you have to find a way to assess each students learning style. Once you accomplish it directs how you convey the material so that the student is able to understand it and apply it.
